The song Marius is singing is sad. It's as if he blames himself for the Revolution and if it was really worth it. It's as if he is carrying a guilt and needs forgiveness. But I feel for the woman who died loving him. It's sad that he hurt her, because she loved him so very much.

I think that this song is so sad. Marius lost everyone he loved except Cosette and he feels guilty. He loves Cosette but she reminds him of his friends did for their cause. They duded fighting for freedom but never lived to see it happen. When he vists the barricade he is reminded of them. I also thinks that he thinks of his friend who also died.

I love this song so much! It breaks my heart everywhere I hear because this man has lost everybody that he loves, except for a girl. He feels guilty about being happy with her without them. I feel so sorry for him! In the entire movie/play/musical this is the saddest song that I have found so far. I hope that other people agree with me about the meaning of this song. Because once somebody dies and you believe that it is your fault, then those people that have moved on stay with you forever. You can't hear or see the, or feel them, but you know that they are there.

i love this song and it is soooo sad, i mean i was the only one who survived a disaster .... i have no words for the pain he must of felt, soo sad, i really love this movie, best movie ever made all the songs are great

This man feels such grief because his friends have all left him in the woes of battle. He feels guilty that he lived on and they did not. He can remember all of the things they had done together. He can remember the plans of utopia they were having, of having a better world. But now they cannot create this fabulous utopia. He can hear the voices of his friends all around him. He sees the faces of grief. The spirits seem to call for him and ask him, "What was my sacrifice for?" But he cannot answer them because of such grief by seeing the empty chairs at empty tables
