You know I'm not one to break promises
I don't want to hurt you but I need to breathe
At the end of it all, you're still my best friend
But there's something inside that I need to release
Which way is right, which way is wrong
How do I say that I need to move on
You know we're headed separate ways
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There's nothing I can really say
I can't lie no more, I can't hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I'll be on my way
You gave me more that I can return
Yet there's so much that you deserve
Nothing to say, nothing to do,
I've nothing to give
I must leave without you
You know we're headed separate ways
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There's nothing I can really say
I can't lie no more, I can't hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I'll be on my way
So I'll be on my way
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There's nothing that I can really say
I can't lie no more, I can't hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I'll be on my way
So I'll be on my way
So I'll be on my way
Obviously it's a breakup song with the guy trying to soften the blow by wanting to stay best friends, acknowledging that she needs and deserves more and he has nothing to offer, but the essential truth is that while he says he can't lie any more ("no more"), he has been lying. Probably the only thing he isn't lying about is his need to breathe and be on his way. Or I'm just projecting the lies of my ex "soul mate" onto the author and Quint is right.
The one thing I know is that there's a blatant error in the line "You know we have...separate way" It says "is", which makes no sense at all. If you LISTEN to the song, he sings, "You know we have OUR separate ways." But as with other songs, it's impossible to edit the lyrics to correct the error! Extremely annoying. What's next? "She loves you yes yes yes?"
