- The Battle Of Falkirk Muir Lyrics

Up and run awa', Hawley, up and run awa'
The philabegs are comin' doon tae gie yer lugs a claw
Young Charlie's face at Dunipace has gie'd yer moo' a thraw
Hawley, blastin' sight o' bastard wight the worst that e'er he saw
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'
Up and run awa', and run awa'

Whene'er ye saw the bonnets blue doon fae the Torwood draw
A wisp in need did you bestead perhaps you needed twa
General Husk that battle busk that pride o' warriors a'
Hawley, whip and spur he crossed the furr as fast as he could ca'
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'
Up and run awa', and run awa'

I hae but just ae word to say and ye maun hear it a'
We came to charge wi' sword and targe and nae tae hunt ava'
When we came doon aboot the toon and saw nae faes at a'
We could not believe the truth that ye had left us a'
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'
Up and run awa', and run awa'
Nae man bedeen believed his een till your brave back he saw
Hawley, bastard brat o' foreign cat had neither pluck nor paw
We didnae ken but ye were men wha fight for foreign law
Gae fill yer wame wi' brose at hame, it fits ye best of a'
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'
Up and run awa'

The very froon o' hielan' loon it gart you drop the jaw
Happ'd the face o' a' disgrace and sickened Southron maw
The very gleam o' hielan' flame it pit you in a thaw
Gae back and kiss your daddy's miss, ye're nane but cowards a'
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'

Up an' scour awa', Hawley, up an' scour awa'
The hielan' dirk is at yer doup an' that's the hielan' law
Hielan' Geordie's at yer tail wi' Drummond, Perth an' a'
Had ye but stayed wi' lady's maid an hour or maybe twa
Yer bacon bouk an' bastard snout ye might hae saved them a'

This song is an intensely brogue span of insults, one after another, about the actual battle at Falkirk Muir in 1746. The final line in each verse refers to the Jacobite army; "Hielan' Geordie" is a reference to Lord George Murray, one of the commanders, and Lord Drummond joined up with four thousand men from Perth.

It starts out talking about how Commander Hawley was afraid after seeing Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his troops (philabegs). The Jacobites expected to be attacked, given the attitude of the man on the throne, so were surprised when none came.

Later, when the Jacobite army was moving in on Hawley's camp, a messenger was sent to warn Hawley of their impending peril. He didn't believe the first, so General Husk sent a second messenger, 'Perhaps ye needed twa."

The Jacobites planned to take the encampment by surprise, so when they came down and saw that Hawley wasn't there, they were shocked.

They soon got the battle they were hoping for though. Hawley made the mistake of sending his dragoons against Highlanders; the dragoon's charge was ineffective, leaving many dead and the rest fleeting. The Highlanders charged after them, and broke Hawley's army. Some of my favorite insults come here, "we figured it was because you're fighting for someone else's crown; go back home and fill your harem with men."

Other insults start flying, basically calling him a coward, among other things. "Gae back and kiss your daddy's miss" is telling him he's a bastard and he should go back and kiss his mommy.
