KENNY CHESNEY

- Demons Lyrics

Sometimes they're in a bottle,
Sometimes a pair of high-heel shoes,
Some come rolled in paper
Some have six strings and only play the blues
Once you've met the devil
There ain't no way he'll let you be
When I'm not chasing demons,
There's demons chasing me

Skeletons in closets
Ghosts underneath the bed
They hide out in pictures
And words better left unsaid
They hang around like perfume
And haunt me like an ancient melody
When I'm not chasing demons,
There's demons chasing me

There's things that I can't leave alone
'Cause they won't leave me alone
What I want ain't what I need
Still I reach for the things I crave
Then try to run away
Am I afraid of being free
'Cause when I'm not chasing demons
There's demons chasing me

So roll one up and light it
Pick up my old guitar
I'm playing crossroads
Drinking whiskey from a mason jar
Heartache at my front door
Says she needs my company
When I'm not chasing demons
There's demons chasing me

There's things that I can't leave alone
'Cause they won't leave me alone
What I want ain't what I need
Still I reach for the things I crave
Then try to run away
Am I afraid of being free
'Cause when I'm not chasing demons
There's demons chasing me

When I'm not chasing demons
There's demons chasing me

Demons chasing me [repeats]

What is the meaning behind Demons lyrics?

When we try to understand the message behind it, Kenny Chesney's 'Demons' tells a narrative about the struggles and temptations one might encounter during life's journey, with the demons as the constantly abated and pursued by the individual. The demons here refer mainly to the person's own weaknesses, and their innermost desires, and the hardest of their challenges which are all closely related to the person's very being and the surrounding music and distractions. The lyrics of Demons more than anything express feelings of angst, introspection, despair, heartbreak, and loneliness. Yet, the song accompanies the listener on a hard path of the inner demon, addiction, and temptation, and fear of taking one's freedom. Among the issues raised in the lyrics regarding one's inner demons and substances are those that are probably not suited for children below 13. The allusions to slaughtering demons in the drunk state signal the need for parental guidance due to the matured themes.

Kenny said it best when he said we all have demons chasing us. Some of us fight addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex or money. They are the "demons" chasing us. Some are harder to kick than others. We have to face them, like the song says, we can't run away because they will follow us wherever we go. We have to face them and beat them. It's hard, really hard. They fill our heads with lies about who we are, tell us we are weak, undeserving of love, undeserving of compassion and kindness. Sometimes they are so hard to fight because their lies are too convincing.......
