From the Album "Will O' the Wisp" (1975)
What can I say to this child of my own
When he looks up to me for the answer
He's got trust in his eyes and such innocent ways
What are the words I can say
Can I tell him of my life
And can it be used for his own life's goal - an example
To follow and finally remember some day
What are the words I can say
I could say I was once wondering just like you
And I understand the thing you're feeling
But gray hair and lines on my face just might say
The old man is always acting that way
And now I think of my daddy, he bought these kind of shoes
And after all this time I think I know him
I'd like to say I love him but the time has passed away
What are the words I can say
What are the words I can say?
His song is about how to tell his "son" about life. He had a son with Mary McCrary, his wife (i.e., Leon and Mary Wedding Album). This song is extremely meaningful to me because I have a handicapped son that is now 36 and functions at the level of a 2 year old. His life was tragic and full of seizures. What do you say to a child that has no idea he's not living, he just exists in the same state he's been in for 35 years.
