As the world was turning, long ago way back in time
Not a star was burning, only darkness filled the sky
Then the land was covered by the sun
Flowers started growing one by one
One by one came the leaves to the trees
One by one came the waves on the seas
Came a man and the wife, life had begun
And they were blessed with little children
One by one
Everyone a brother, joining hands in songs of praise
Helping one an other, through the dawning of the age
But soon the bonds of friendship were undone
Fighting for their places in the sun
One by one came the boats to the shores
One by one went the young men to the wars
Many died in the fight and few returned
One by one they told the leason they had learned
One by one we must kneel we must pray
One by one we must learn to love again
Let our children walk out in the sun
Through the land let's all join hands
One by one
One by one came the leaves to the trees
One by one came the waves upon the seas.
Came a man and the wife, life had begun
Let us all join hands togeather one by one
My meaning to this song, right at the time I first heard it on the Cliff Richard show, song for Europe, 1972, the film, Nicholas and Alexandra was on at the pictures.. it does have a Russian flavour to it, so the story could well be covering the great war of 1914-18 which included the Russian Revolution and the slaughter of the Romanov family.
