Cable:
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

It is so clear---and nicely appropriate to that 1940's time, a forerunner no doubt. And, now today, 2023, with Israel and Gaza. Who indeed there was carefully taught to hate and fear? Oh, how we know. And, Islam is sometimes called a peaceful religion. And America's college kids are supposed to be the most open-minded in the world, not.

I wish everyone on the planet could know this song. You have to be carefully taught to hate.
Think back to the first time you hated someone who was different from you and your family. It probably did come from legitimate fear at the time.
I think this song means that we could teach love. There seems a lack of it lately. People afraid to hug. People are afraid to hug a child! Just think of that.
And I have agoraphobia, yet I'm reaching out this way. I hope the whole world can work on teaching love. Peace. Compassion. Kindness. These can be taught too.
